Loni Love Gets Loose About “The Real,” A DMN Briefing Interview

The Real Hosts 2014

Man Crush Mondays, Twitter Dares, Gab Bag giveways and a five-host demo for the “Nae Nae” dance—-on Fox’s daytime talk show The Real, mixing it up is all in a day’s work and Loni Love is excited to be a part of it.

“I feel so fortunate and grateful, none of us are taking it for granted,” the 43-year-old shared recently by phone from the set. The actress, author and comedian co-hosts The Real, which made its syndication debut earlier this month. It also features Jeannie Mai, Adrienne Ballon,Tamera Mowry-Housley and Tamar Braxton. According to Love, their spin on daytime TV and offers a refreshing spin on typical talk show fare.

“Everyone is from their 30s up to 40s, some of us are married, dating, have children or are single and all of us are women of color, so it gives us the opportunity to bring topics of discussion to the table that aren’t always discussed on other programs,” says the Detroit native and former engineer. “One day we’re talking about relationships or parenting, sometimes we do giveaways and other days we just have girl chat, but what’s really important is that we’re counteracting the idea of colored women on TV screaming, fighting and hitting each other just because we disagree.

Love says that the bad-girl reality show stereotype is so pervasive that people are surprised that the five hosts at The Real actually get along. “Yes we’re all different and we’re gonna disagree, but everyone is still learning and making new discoveries about themselves and each other,” she says, “so if we really discuss those differences, we can work them out.”

Loni Love’s enviable resume prepared her for The Real and its exhaustive range of duties. In addition to spending two decades on the road as a stand-up comic, Love wrote a relationship book (Love Him Or Leave Him, But Don’t Get Stuck With The Tab) and made appearances in films (Soul Plane, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2) and as a guest host (Chelsea Lately). “We all tape two shows a day six days a week on-site [in Los Angeles], do promos for TV stations, travel and have field shoots, which is standard for daytime talk, and we still have other side projects,” Love says. “All of the ladies are hard workers, especially Tamar. You have to remember that during our test run, she was pregnant with her son Logan, dropped the baby, released her CD and went on tour, but I never heard her complain. We’ve been cool from the first day forward, have a mutual respect and she’s getting the accolades she deserves, trust me.”

As for what the future holds, Love promises more interactive fun with both viewers and the studio audience, big celebrity guests and yes, all of the ladies raising eyebrows from time to time as they hit nerves and in the pursuit of keeping it real. “There’s no ‘leader’ on this show,” she says. “We’re all on the same level and we want to be the place where people go to have fun and get loose. It’s like a ‘girlfriend check-in hour’—you think it, we say it.”
